Oklahoma elevator codes impose a responsibility on building owners and property managers to adhere to specific requirements within elevators, ensuring the safety of all occupants. Failure to comply with these codes can result in penalties and potential legal action. While the particulars of the Oklahoma elevator code may differ at the state and local levels, three primary codes govern elevator safety: the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the International Building Code (IBC), and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

ADA

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mandates unrestricted and equal access to services for individuals with disabilities.

IBC

The International Building Code (IBC) establishes precautions against hazards associated with constructed environments.

ASME

The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) plays a pivotal role in the development of codes and standards.

The State of Oklahoma (OK) currently operates under the 2022 ASME A17.1 and CSA B-44 Code

Oklahoma Elevator Code Authority

Program Description
The Elevator Escalator Service provides administrative assistance, education, training, and awareness within the State of Oklahoma to ensure public safety when operating an elevator or escalator.

The program strives to provide professional, reliable and efficient service for those governed and affected by elevator and escalator industries in compliance with state statutes, in order to promote a safer Oklahoma.

Program Services
The Department of Labor, in order to protect public health and safety, has jurisdiction to ensure that elevators, escalators, moving sidewalks and similar devices are installed, maintained, and regularly inspected in compliance with recognized safety standards and codes.

All elevator contractors, elevator mechanics and elevator inspectors are required to be licensed by the state. Elevator inspectors must be licensed, pass national standards evaluations, and obtain continuing credits. The program conducts an annual summit that informs industry members of changes to statutes/rules as well as industry trends and safety concerns.

This program works to ensure the safe installation, operation, service, and repair of all eligible elevators and escalators in the state, except for the City of Oklahoma City, which conducts its own inspections. Inspectors are responsible for annual, biennial, or triennial inspections of over 6,200 elevators in the state. (excerpt from state website)

Code Compliance Guidelines

State Code Snapshot
The Oklahoma Elevator Code is enforced through statewide elevator safety rules plus any local requirements where a city runs its own program, so it is smart to confirm the authority that inspects your specific address before starting work.

Adopted Safety Standard Edition
The Oklahoma Elevator Code currently aligns with the state’s adoption and enforcement of the applicable ASME A17.1 edition, and owners should treat the effective date as the compliance line for new work and plan review decisions.

Who Regulates and Inspects
The Oklahoma Elevator Code is administered through the state elevator program that oversees licensing, inspections, and documentation so owners can demonstrate safe operation to inspectors, insurers, and tenants.

Inspection Frequency Expectations
The Oklahoma Elevator Code sets inspection timing by equipment type, so property teams should track due dates, schedule ahead, and avoid last minute gaps that can delay certificates or trigger enforcement issues.

Certificates and Renewals
The Oklahoma Elevator Code ties lawful operation to an inspection outcome and a current certificate, so it is important to align inspection scheduling, correction closeout, and renewal timing in one simple internal calendar.

Registration and Device Records
The Oklahoma Elevator Code framework expects accurate device information on file, so owners should keep registration details current after modernization, controller changes, phone upgrades, or any change that impacts emergency communications.

Permits and Plan Review for Work
The Oklahoma Elevator Code typically requires permits for new installations and certain alterations, and plan review expectations can expand a project scope if communications, accessibility, or safety features are affected by the work.

Licensing Requirements
The Oklahoma Elevator Code is enforced through licensing of elevator contractors, mechanics, and inspectors, so owners should verify credentials before authorizing work and keep license documentation with the building’s compliance file.

Variances and Equivalency
The Oklahoma Elevator Code includes a formal variance path when a strict requirement is not practical, but the key is documenting equivalent safety and keeping the approved variance accessible for inspectors and future owners.

Local Program Differences
The Oklahoma Elevator Code may be enforced differently in certain municipalities, so the safest approach is to confirm whether a city conducts its own inspections and whether additional standards apply to permits submitted in that jurisdiction.

Emergency Phone Reliability
The Oklahoma Elevator Code makes emergency communications a real life safety function, so building teams should prioritize dependable two way calling, clear location identification, routine testing, and fast correction of any failures discovered during inspection or service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Elevator Code and Inspection Compliance

What is the Oklahoma Elevator Code used for during inspections

Inspectors use it as the baseline safety standard to evaluate installation conditions, maintenance records, periodic testing, and whether the elevator can legally operate with a current certificate and no unresolved safety issues.

When do I need a permit or plan review for elevator work

Permits are commonly required for new installations and many alterations or major repairs. If the scope touches controls, door equipment, safety devices, or emergency communications, expect plan review questions before the inspector signs off.

How often are elevators inspected under the Oklahoma Elevator Code

The interval depends on equipment type and use, and your inspector will track due dates in the state system. The practical best practice is to schedule early, then close violations quickly so the certificate process stays smooth.

What records should I keep to stay aligned with the Oklahoma Elevator Code

Keep inspection reports, certificates, proof of corrections, maintenance control documentation, periodic test records, and contractor licensing information in one place so you can produce them immediately during inspections or audits.

How can MyLinkLine help with emergency phone compliance

MyLinkLine supports compliance by providing a cellular-based elevator phone line option built for reliability and easier testing, reducing the risk of disconnected copper lines, failed call completion, or unclear routing during an emergency.
