Massachusetts Pool Phone Code Requirements
DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH. 105 CMR 435.00: MINIMUM STANDARDS FOR SWIMMING POOLS (STATE SANITARY CODE: CHAPTER V). 435.25: First Aid Equipment and Emergency Communication: Per (2)
An emergency communication system which at a minimum would allow convenient, immediate, and toll-free communication with emergency medical services, local police, state police. and the local fire department, must be in working order and available at each pool.
The telephone numbers of the emergency medical services, local police, state police and fire department, as well as any instructions necessary to operate the communication system shall be posted in a conspicuous place near the communication device or station.
The location of the emergency communication device must be in an area that is unlocked and available to both the staff and the public at all times.
Helpful tip: While it is possible to program telephones to dial 911 for emergency dispatch, it is generally discouraged. Most 911 dispatch centers prefer that pool telephones do not tie up emergency lines with non-emergency or prank calls. Additionally, fines may be imposed for dispatching emergency personnel to non-emergency situations. Therefore, we do not recommend relying solely on 911 for handling pool telephone calls.
If you are programming the pool phone to call 911, it’s advisable to obtain written permission from your local 911 authority to ensure you won’t face charges for false or nuisance calls.
